Katy escapes during the Hungarian Revolution

Posted by

A neighbor, Katy, gives her account:

My grandparents spoke German at home. My grandfather was Polish, meeting my grandmother during WWI.  They lived happily until WWII.

When Hitler came into power, Hungarian Germans sided with Nazis.  All bridges were destroyed during WWII. In 1944, my mother was shopping with some friends. They wanted to go on the trolley but it was too crowded. Then the bridge was blown up. Everyone on the trolley died.  The Germans bombed the bridges to thwart the Russians, setting charges underneath.  But when the river froze it could be crossed. Read more »

Tolerance- British style

Posted by

Apparently, this was a reader’s ‘letter to the editor ‘ published in daily “SUN” :

I am truly perplexed that so many of my friends are against another mosque being built in London on the Thames. I think it should be the goal of every Englishman to be tolerant. Thus the Mosque should be allowed, in an effort to promote tolerance. Read more »

Video: What a history lesson can do for an Occupier

Posted by

Be sure to watch the video from Hotair:
The irony here, of course, is that the history lesson of democracy gets delivered by a former refugee from the former Soviet Union, but the history lesson doesn’t just end with the USA. One young man tried to pass an “Occupy Wall Street Journal” to two men observing the protests, and ended up gaining an education in history, politics, economics, and statecraft. Give the young Occupier credit, as Joe Schoffstall says — he was at least willing to listen.
Our group has its own refugee, Eva, who escaped from communist Hungary during the revolution of 1956. She is equally well informed and grateful for capitalism.  Here’s her story: Read more »

A little history lesson from Dick Morris

Posted by

Here it is in a nutshell:
  • You can’t have socialism in just one country because the capital will move to countries with capitalism. This is what happened to France in the 1980’s when so many industries were nationalized. Capital fled to Britain and the US.
  • The European Union standardized work rules, maximizing amount of vacation, minimizing the number of hours worked, firing standards and so on. As a result, 80% of new jobs created in the western world between the Reagan and Obama administrations went to the US.
  • A study was done which tracked the poorest 20% in 1990 and again in 2000. 17% of the poorest 20% were still poor, but 18% were in the top 20%. The rest fell somewhere in between. Upward mobility is alive and well in the US! Not so in Europe where it is based upon government policies rather than individual initiative.
  • Obama wants to adopt the European system, the consequences of which mean no economic growth.
  • We need to reverse the expansion of entitlements (50M Americans are on foodstamps!) and vote Obama out of office in 2012!
